Disclosure: we make SofaDeck, which is one of the options below. Facts about Windows and other products were checked on 23 October 2026 and can change. SofaDeck is not affiliated with or endorsed by Elgato, Discord, Valve or Epic Games; all trademarks belong to their owners.
Short answer: for gaming, a Stream Deck is mostly useful around the game, not in it: launching games, muting Discord, saving clips, screenshots, music and audio switching, and keeping an eye on temperatures. Your keyboard and mouse stay faster for in-game actions. All of those extras work just as well on a phone on a stand next to your monitor, which is free and also takes voice commands.

Set up a gaming deck on your phone
- Install SofaDeck on your gaming PC and scan the QR code with your phone. No app to install on the phone.
- Put the phone on a stand beside your monitor and turn on landscape for bigger buttons.
- Add your Discord buttons (see our Discord mute button guide for the F13 trick).
- Add media buttons for music, a screenshot button and the apps you open every session.
- Open the PC stats page when you want to watch temperatures during a benchmark or a long session.
- With Pro, import your Steam and Epic libraries and say "play" plus a game's name to launch it.

If a game runs as administrator, Windows blocks key presses sent by normal apps while it's in front; run SofaDeck as administrator in that case. Some anti-cheat systems also ignore injected keys — test before a match.
When hardware is worth it
If you stream while you play, a hardware Stream Deck's tactile keys are easier to hit without looking away, and your phone stays free for chat. For sim rigs, a physical button box beats a touchscreen for in-race controls. Our honest take on that is in is a Stream Deck worth it? and a phone as a sim racing button box.
For the living-room side of PC gaming, see the LaunchBox and Big Box remote and HTPC remote guides. A desk phone stand keeps the deck at eye level.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Stream Deck useful for gaming if you don't stream?
Somewhat. Gamers use one for launching games, Discord mute and deafen, clips and screenshots, music, and switching audio outputs. In-game actions are usually faster on your keyboard and mouse. A phone deck covers the same extras for free.
Can I launch Steam games from my phone?
Yes. SofaDeck Pro imports your Steam, Epic and LaunchBox libraries as buttons and lets you launch games by voice ("play Hades"). With the free version you can add a button that opens a game's shortcut or a steam://rungameid link.
Will key presses from my phone work in games?
Most games accept them. Two exceptions: games running as administrator (run SofaDeck as administrator too), and some games or anti-cheat systems that ignore keys sent by other programs. Test a button before you rely on it in a match.
Can my phone show my GPU temperature while I play?
Yes. SofaDeck's free PC stats page shows CPU, memory, disk and NVIDIA GPU load and temperature on your phone, refreshed every 2 seconds, so you don't need an overlay.
