Short answer: on Windows 11, Win+Alt+K mutes your mic in calls in apps that support it, such as Teams. To mute the microphone for every app, turn it off in Settings → System → Sound, flip the mute switch on your headset, or use a mute button that mutes the device itself — including a free one on your phone. Here is each way, when to use it, and the shortcuts for the apps people mute most.

Mute from Windows settings

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings → System → Sound.
  2. Under Input, click your microphone.
  3. Next to Audio, click Don't allow. Click Allow to turn it back on.

To block every app from the microphone instead, use Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and turn off Microphone access. That's a privacy switch rather than a quick mute: apps report "no microphone" until you turn it back on.

Windows 10

Open Settings → System → Sound, choose your input device, click Device properties and tick Disable. Or open the classic Control Panel → Sound → Recording tab, double-click the microphone, open Levels and click the speaker icon to mute it.

A one-tap mute button on your phone

App shortcuts mute one app and often only when it's in front; Windows settings are several clicks away. SofaDeck's Mic & calls button (free, Windows, 1.0.9 or later) mutes every active microphone on the PC through Windows' own audio controls, so it doesn't matter whether you're in Discord, a browser call or a game. The button turns red and reads MUTED, or LIVE when the mic is on, and it updates if something else changes the mute. Next to it you can add Discord mute and deafen, Teams mute and Zoom mute buttons that press each app's own shortcut for you — SofaDeck brings the right window forward for a moment and hands the focus straight back.

  1. Install SofaDeck on the Windows PC (free) and pair your phone by scanning the QR code and typing the PIN.
  2. Add a button and choose the type Mic & calls, then Microphone (toggle).
  3. Tap it to mute every microphone on the PC; the button turns red and shows MUTED. Tap again for LIVE.
  4. Optionally add Discord mute, Discord deafen, Teams mute or Zoom mute buttons next to it, or just say "mute my mic".

Muting the device vs muting in the app: a device-level mute silences you everywhere, but the meeting app may still show you as unmuted. If colleagues need to see the mute icon, use the Teams or Zoom mute button as well.

Voice works too: say "mute my mic", "unmute the microphone", "mute discord" or "deafen me on discord" (plain "mute" still mutes the speakers). More: a Teams and Zoom mute button, the Discord mute button guide and Discord push to talk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the shortcut to mute the microphone on Windows 11?

Win+Alt+K mutes and unmutes your microphone in calls in apps that support Windows 11's call mute, such as Microsoft Teams, and a mic icon appears in the taskbar while a call is active. It isn't a system-wide mute for every app. For that, turn the input off in Settings → System → Sound, or use a mute button that mutes the device itself.

How do I mute my mic on PC without a shortcut?

Windows 11: Settings → System → Sound → pick your microphone under Input → set Audio to Don't allow, or drag its volume to 0. Windows 10: Settings → System → Sound → Device properties → tick Disable, or Control Panel → Sound → Recording → Properties → Levels → the speaker icon.

Is there a button that mutes my mic in every app at once?

Yes. A hardware mute switch on a headset or USB mic does it, and so does SofaDeck's free Mic & calls button (Windows, 1.0.9 or later), which mutes every active microphone on the PC with one tap from your phone and shows MUTED or LIVE.

Why do people still hear me after I muted in Windows?

You may have muted a different device than the one the app uses. Check which microphone the app has selected in its own audio settings. A mute that covers every recording device avoids this.
