How do I mute Google Meet with one button?

Meet's own shortcut is Ctrl+D for the microphone (Ctrl+E for the camera; Cmd on a Mac), and it only works while the Meet tab is in front. SofaDeck can put it on a phone button (combos are Pro), or use its free system-wide mic mute, which mutes the microphone itself, so Meet and every other app hear nothing. Say "mute my mic" or tap the button.

  1. Install SofaDeck on your PC (free)
  2. Scan the QR code with your phone
  3. Tap

Works on iPhone & Android — no app needed. Scan the QR code on your PC with the phone's camera and the remote opens in its browser. On Android you can also add the optional Google Play app.

Google Meet runs in a browser tab, which makes muting awkward: the keyboard shortcut only reaches Meet when its tab has focus, and during a call you're often in a document or another window. There are two ways round that with a phone.

The first is Meet's own shortcut on a button. The second is SofaDeck's system-wide microphone mute, free since 1.0.9, which mutes every active microphone on the PC at the device level. It doesn't care which window is in front or which app you're calling in.

Set it up in 5 steps

  1. Install SofaDeck on the computer you take calls on and pair your phone.
  2. Add a Call button and choose Mic (mute all microphones). It shows whether the mic is muted.
  3. With Pro, also add Meet's own shortcuts: Ctrl+D (mic) and Ctrl+E (camera).
  4. Prop the phone next to the screen, or keep it in your hand.
  5. Test once before a call: tap mute and check Meet's mic level stays flat while you talk.

Meet's shortcuts are Google's; Meet's keyboard shortcut list (press Ctrl + / in a call) shows the current ones. The free version holds one page of 12 buttons, so start with the ones you reach for most; Pro removes the limit.

Or just say it

Tap the microphone on the phone (or type in the say-or-type bar) and SofaDeck runs the command on the PC. Any button also runs by saying its label. The full voice command list has the rest.

What's free and what needs Pro

Everything in the table above is free except Meet: mic, Meet: camera. Pro is from $6.99 once for every phone you pair, with no subscription, and adds unlimited pages, hotkey combos, macros and Smart pages that switch the phone to your Google Meet page when Google Meet comes to the front (Windows). SofaDeck also offers a 7-day Pro trial.

Limits, honestly

  • With the system-wide mute, Meet's own mic icon stays on: others see you unmuted but hear silence. Use Ctrl+D if the icon matters.
  • Meet's Ctrl+D and Ctrl+E only reach Meet while its tab is the active window, and combos are Pro.
  • On a Mac the system-wide mute sets the input volume to zero; unmuting brings back the level it had.
  • Both need the phone and PC on the same network.

SofaDeck runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit) and on the Mac (macOS 11 Big Sur or later, on Apple silicon or Intel). The phone needs only a browser: iPhone or Android, no app to install, on the same Wi-Fi as the PC.

Other ways to control Google Meet from your phone

A USB headset with a mute button, or a foot pedal mapped to Ctrl+D, does this without a phone. Windows 11's own call mute (Win+Alt+K) works in apps that support it, and the Google Meet hardware kits have their own buttons. SofaDeck's advantage is one mute that works in Meet, Teams, Zoom and Discord alike.

Google Meet is a trademark of its owner. SofaDeck is made by Dixon App Studio and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the makers of Google Meet. Shortcuts listed are the app's defaults at the time of writing and can change.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Google Meet mute shortcut?

Ctrl+D on Windows and ChromeOS, Cmd+D on a Mac, while the Meet tab is in front. Ctrl+E (Cmd+E) turns the camera on and off.

Can I mute Google Meet when the tab isn't in front?

Not with Meet's shortcut. A system-wide mic mute, like SofaDeck's free Mic button, mutes the microphone itself, so it works whatever window is in front.

Is the mute button free?

Yes, the system-wide mic mute and "mute my mic" by voice are free. Buttons for Meet's own Ctrl shortcuts need Pro.

Does it work for Teams and Zoom too?

Yes. The system-wide mute works in every app, and SofaDeck also has Teams and Zoom mute buttons that press their own shortcuts.
